The FLW Region enjoys an abundance of higher education amenities that energize the regional economy. These entities are particularly advantageous for the attraction and cultivation of advanced manufacturing and R&D operations.
With 5,500 students, the University of Missouri-Rolla is home to a nationally ranked engineering school and a wide range of computer-based disciplines. It houses one of the State’s four Innovation Centers (operated by Missouri Enterprise) which provide technical assistance and incubation services to new and expanding technology-based businesses.

The Instructional Software Development Center (ISDC) was formed in 1995 and produced dozens of interactive software and web applications. In 2004, the Center for Technology Enhanced Learning (CTEL) was created at UMR by the merger of ISDC and the University’s Information Technology Division. Today, CTEL is an important regional asset for developing the IT software segment.
Phelps County also has four satellite campuses in Rolla for : Columbia College, Drury University, East Central College and Lincoln University. It also is home to the Rolla Technical Institute and the Rolla Technical Center.
In Pulaski County, the Truman Education Campus at Fort Leonard Wood is open to everyone in the region. It supports seven different colleges and universities and grants more than 650 degrees per year including associate, bachelor's and master's degrees. Its institutions include: Central Texas College, Columbia College, Drury University, Lincoln University, Park University, University of Missouri Rolla, and Webster University. Drury University also has a campus in St. Robert and the Waynesville Technical Academy is located in Waynesville.
Laclede County has extensive degree offerings from three top institutions in Lebanon: Drury University, Missouri State University and Ozarks Technical College.
The Fort Leonard Wood military installation is home to the U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center (MANSCEN), which hosts the Army's Engineering, Military Police, and Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Schools. A state-of-the-art training facility, Fort Leonard Wood is located on 100 square miles of land and trains more than 40,000 military and civilian personnel each year.
Besides training, the Fort has important science and technology missions as combat developer and battle laboratory for nuclear, biological, and chemical defense; civil, geospatial and environmental engineering; and military police functions. The Center also develops concepts, doctrine, force structure, material requirements and experiments to ensure the vitality of the chemical, engineer and military police organizations and has been designated a center for homeland security excellence.
