Population

 

The current population of the Fort Leonard Wood Region is 122,213. The 2000 Census recorded a population of 113,503, a 9.44 percent increase over the 1990 figure of 103,713. Area population is projected to be 132,000 in 2009, an increase of 8.01 percent from 2004.

 

The current population is 51.66 percent male and 48.34 percent female. In 2004, the median age of the population in this area was 33.4 years, compared to the US median age of 36.2. The population density is 61.3 people per square mile.

 

Households

 

There are currently 45,123 households in the Region. The 2000 Census revealed 41,876 households, a 16.02 percent increase from the 36,094 figure in 1990. The number of households is projected to be 48,943 in 2009, an increase of 8.47 percent from the current year. Currently, the average household size in this area is 2.71 persons.

 

In 2004, the median number of years in residence in this geography's population is 2.55. The average family size was 2.90 people, and the average number of vehicles per household in this geography was 1.8.

 

Income

 

In 2004, the median household income in the Region was $33,453, compared to the US median which was $45,660. The Census revealed median household income of $31,101 in 2000, an increase of 48.78 percent over the $20,905 recorded in 1990. Median household income in this area is projected to be $36,164 in 2009, an increase of 8.10 percent over the current year.

 

In 2004, the per capita income in this area was $16,456, compared to US per capita income of $24,583. The 2004 average household income for this area was $42,187, compared to the US average of $63,396.

 

Race & Ethnicity

 

In 2004, the racial makeup of the Region was as follows: 88.40% White; 5.39% Black;  0.72% Native American; 1.77% Asian/Pacific Islander; and 1.21% Other. Compare these figres to the US racial makeup which was: 75.05% White, 12.29% Black, 0.89% Native American, 3.66% Asian/Pacific Islander and 5.53% Other.

 

People of Hispanic ethnicity are counted independently of race. People of Hispanic origin make up 2.91% of the current year population in this selected area. Compare this to the US makeup of 14.27%. Changes in the population within each race and ethnicity category from the 1990 Census to the 2000 Census are as follows: 46.8% American Indian, Eskimo, Aleut Population; 3.4% Asian, Pacific Islander; -7.1% Black; 37.3% Hispanic Ethnicity; 8.4% Other; White 7.6%.

 

Housing

 

The median housing value in the Region was $46,629 in 1990 compared to the US median of $78,382 for the same year. The 2000 Census median housing value was $71,330, a 53.0 percent increase from 1990. In 1990, there were 23,255 owner occupied housing units in this area compared to 41,876 in 2000. Also in 1990, there were 12,835 renter occupied housing units in this area compared to 14,506 in 2000. The average rent in 1990 was $221 compared to $350 in 2000.

 

Employment

 

In 2004, there were 96,404 people over the age of 16 in the labor force in the Region. Of these 79.97 percent were employed, 5.19 percent were unemployed, 35.00 percent were not in the labor force and 14.84 percent were in the armed forces. In 1990, unemployment in this area was 4.26 percent, and in 2000 it was 3.33 percent.

 

In 2004, there were 42,784 employees (daytime population) and there were 4,667 establishments.

 

In 1990, 49.60 percent of employees were employed in white-collar occupations, and 50.40 percent were employed in blue-collar occupations. In 2000, white collar workers made up 51.49 percent of the population, and those employed in blue collar occupations made up 48.51 percent. In 1990, the average time traveled to work was 10 minutes, and in 2000 it was 15 minutes.
