Infrastructure is described below in terms of transportation and utilities,

Transportation.  An extensive federal and state highway network designed to provide easy access to regional and national markets serves Rolla/Phelps County.  This network, coupled with Rolla’s central location in the U.S., makes this area one of the nation’s most cost effective places for sending and receiving goods.

Transportation Services.  A variety of transport services are available to businesses located in Rolla/Phelps County.  These services include motor freight and parcel carriers, rail service, and air travel.

Trucking.  The trucking capability of Rolla exceeds all other shipping modes.  Rolla/Phelps County is home to many independent truckers and is strategically located to command the truck resources of multiple contract and common carriers.  Outbound freight costs are particularly competitive.  The full range of trucking services, from leasing, repair, and purchasing of truck-related equipment is available in the Rolla area.  Rolla boasts three heavy hauling trucking companies and three motor freight carriers with local terminals.  Most overnight services are available in Rolla, including UPS, Fed Ex Ground, USA Express, Airborne Express and many others.

Air.  The Rolla National Airport is located just 12 miles /19 km north of the City on U.S. Highway 63.  The airport’s longest runway (5,500 ft./1,676 meters) can accommodate most corporate aircraft.  Runways are constructed of concrete with asphalt overlay and have a single wheel bearing capacity of 98,000 pounds.  Navigation aids include runway and taxiway lights with ODALS and VASI systems activated remotely for 24-hour all-weather use.  The airport has VOR, an ASOS system, and a DTN weather radar system.  General aviation support includes private aircraft storage, maintenance, and fueling services providing 100 LL and jet fuel.  Airfreight service delivery is also available to the Rolla National Airport.

Commercial Air Transportation. 

Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.  Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is located 1˝ hours (120 miles) east of Rolla/Phelps County.  The airport serves all major cities. Lambert is the 16th largest North American airport with more than 1,000 arriving and departing flights daily. In total 15 passenger airlines provide non-stop service to 96 cities. There are also six cargo companies, with non-stop service to 102 cities.

Springfield-Branson Regional Airport.  The Springfield-Branson Regional Airport is also approximately 1 ˝ hours driving time (120 miles) southwest from Rolla on Interstate 44.  Flights from Springfield connect directly to St. Louis, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, and Memphis.  United Express, American Connection, American Eagle, and Northwest Airlink provide service to the region.

Waynesville Regional Airport at Fort Leonard Wood.  American Connection provides three schedule commuter flights daily from Fort Leonard Wood to St. Louis and return.  

 

Rail.  The main line of the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railway passes through Rolla/Phelps County with two stops per day.  Rail spurs are available and there is ample trackage to manage over 50 cars in storage.  Piggyback ramps are located 70 miles /113 km from Rolla.  The two largest shippers in the area receive over 300 loads inbound and ship over 250 outbound loads annually.     

Bus.  Greyhound Bus Lines provides service to Rolla/Phelps County with six stops per day – three buses going east and three going west on Interstate 44.

Rate - $2.20 for each 1,000 gallons

 

All plants are state certified.  The City has recently completed the expansion of the Southeast Treatment Plant to bring it into compliance with all regulations.

 

Natural Gas.  Natural gas service is provided by Amerin UE.  (800) 465-6553

            A 6-inch gas line at 700 lbs of pressure serves Rolla.  Missouri Gas Company is the pipeline company.  Natural gas service is provided with an average value of 1,000 Btu per cubic foot for customers for base and peak use on a firm basis.  Interruptible service is also available for customers with alternate fuel capacity. 

             In addition to traditional services, Amerin assists large volume users with customized services tailored to their specific needs including firm or interruptible gas transportation services, agency services such as gas procurement, firm/interruptible supply options, balancing, capacity management, cooperative financing on energy projects, billing, metering and winter peaking service, as well as location analysis.

    As a world-class global communications company, Sprint operates the largest 100 percent digital and nationwide PCS wireless network in the US.  Sprint serves over 4,000 cities across the country and is a leader in broadband communications.  Sprint offers a full range of e-business tools from internet access, web hosting, IP security and more.  Sprint’s network interfaces with Private Branch Exchange (PBX) systems.  Sprint provides dedicated ISDN service, which carries voice or data transmission at speeds of 64-128 K.  The Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) enables users to transfer data, voice, imaging, and video simultaneously from 1.544 Mbps to gigabit speeds.  Rolla also enjoys an extensive fiber optics system.
